Cheek To Cheek - Fred Astaire
Cheek to Cheek...How much more romantic can you get? This is personally one of my favorite generes of music. The smooth jazz music with soft vocals almost make it impossible to not get up and dance along with the music! There are two aspects of this type of music that I think are very distinct and original that you can’t find in to many other types of generes of music. The 1st, the soft speaking singing voice. It seems almost as though when Fred is singing he is simply having a conversation with the person he is singing too. It flows so beautifully and exactly with the music in the background.
The 2nd, and I personally think is even better is the vast usage of instruments throughout the song. There are so many different movements of music, rhythms, and sounds that all come together to make such a beautiful piece. It’s almost as though a bunch of musicians got together and decided to just play random sounds and they turned out with this! Other great artists such as Frank Sinatra sing in this same style that is so unique and perfect. For me personally there is nothing that could be improved.
Hi Ridge! I am glad you chose a song from one of your personal favorite genres of music. I myself love Jazz music as well. Something about the smooth and calm sounds just puts me in a trance. I love how you identified two aspects of jazz music being soft speaking and the vast usage of instruments. Fred's voice blends very well with the music in the back especially with his soft spoken tone. I agree that there are many different rhythms and sounds in this song but they blend so perfectly and seamlessly. I also love Frank Sinatra especially "Fly Me To The Moon" because there is such a nice rhythm. I do agree he is another great Jazz artist that is unique. Jazz does also feel extremely romantic when you listen to it. Something about it gives off the vibes of being in love almost. Great topics you spoke about!
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty good analysis of the song. You're pretty spot on with how everything just goes together to make a piece like this to work. I know if I were to try to play this song, it would be pretty messy for a long time due to how short the notes seem to be with this jazz feel. And his voice in the piece just works so well with the overall feel as well. Well done!
ReplyDeleteHey Ridge, everything you wrote is spot on! I've been on a bit of a Fred Astaire binge since starting the class and it's just fantastic to see that someone else sees it the same way I've been seeing it the past few weeks. The way he just talks with a bit of tune in his voice is so different from todays music that it's pretty refreshing to listen to.
